Interpretation Requested:

Background…In the 2006 update to the AAMA 450 specification, the exclusion of bay, bow and other 3-dimensional projecting units was removed. Upon testing these mulled fenestration assemblies, several questions have come up that require additional clarification. This technical interpretation request will address the following areas specifically:
1. Use of a roof during testing
2. Qualifying different angled mullions with one evaluation
3. Clarify what constitutes a water failure

Regarding the use of bay, bow and other 3-dimensional projecting units, the following interpretations are requested:
1. Is the test evaluation intended for the mulled fenestration assembly only and is not intended to qualify any roof constructions?
2. Does the mullion angle used in the mulled fenestration assembly evaluation only qualify that mullion angle?
3. Does water that penetrates the interior most plain of any individual unit and/or mull joint deem a failure?

Date of Inquiry: December 17, 2007
