    ~North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for windows, doors, and skylights
    This is the second edition of AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440, NAFS - North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for windows, doors, and skylights. It supersedes the previous edition, published in 2005 under the title Standard/Specification for windows, doors, and unit skylights. It is jointly published by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), the Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA), and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

    The following significant changes from the previous edition of this Standard/Specification have been made:
    (a) reduction of the number of window and door performance classes from five to four by elimination of Classes C and HC and addition of a new class identified as CW;
    (b) introduction of an option whereby a product is permitted to enter Performance Class R by testing of a specimen of an alternative minimum test size smaller than the gateway test size specified in Table 27, provided that the minimum performance grade (PG) is correspondengly increased (see Clause 9 for details);
    (c) addition of tubular daylighting devices (TDDs);
    (d) revision of the pressure caps for the R and LC classes;
    (e) clarification of the meaning of and difference between design pressure (DP) and performance grade (PG)
    (f) revision of the primary designators for design pressure (DP), performance grade (PG), and size tested.

    This purchase also includes the Update #1 released in May 2008, Update #2 released in September of 2008, and Update #3 released in June of 2009.

    ~Standard/Specification for Windows, Doors, and Unit Skylights
    AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440-05
    This specification is the first edition of a jointly published fenestration standard by US and Canadian Associations (AAMA/WDMA and CSA). This standard is intended to replace previous versions of AAMA/NWWDA 101/I.S.2-97, AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS-02 and CSA A440. This standard identifies the requirements for windows, glass doors, skylights and for the first time side-hinged exterior doors. Included (when applicable) are performance requirements for structural integrity, water resistance, air leakage and forced entry. Window and door products are still divided into five classes for rating purposes, while maintaining material neutrality. In addition to the changes listed above, this standard includes numerous other revisions.

    303-97; Composite Materials

    Interpretation Requested:

    A manufacturer has developed a process for embedding wood fibers into the interior surface of PVC extrusios so that the surfaces may be stained or painted. This is an embeddment process and not a laminating process. When impact testing is performed on the composite product the substrate passes the requirements in AAMA 303 for impact resistance but the wood emulate embeddment does not. The surfaces to receive this treatment are always interior surfaces. The manufacturer wishes to certify the extrusion profiles under AAMA 109.

    A Brief History of the Aluminum Curtain Wall Design Details of Two Recent Buildings Fire Safety in High-Rise Curtain Wall Buildings
    This issue of "Aluminum Curtain Walls" presents articles on two topics which, though quite different in nature, are, in a very real sense, related. The fact that aluminum curtain wall has had an interesting history of continuing development and popularity may be due in part to its having demonstrated the capacity of withstanding such severe tests as building fires. And conversely, the integrity and durability of this type of wall construction are substantiated by its twenty-year history of good performance under exposure to hazards of all kinds.

    AAMA 1702.2-95 and AAMA 1702.2-12; "Summer Mode" Testing

    Interpretation Requested:

    Historically, "Summer Mode" testing to 1702.2-95 involved opening the self-storing storm window on the storm door and leaving the screen in place. The labs are now saying that the storm door is to be fully open, which renders it effectively absent.

    1) With respect to AAMA 1702.2-95, is it the intent of the standard that summer mode testing on a combination door (Primary Side Hinged Door plus attached Secondary Side Hinged Storm Door) be conducted with the Secondary Storm Door fully opened or removed?
    2) With respect to AAMA 1702.2-12, is it the intent of the standard that single mode testing on a combination door (Primary Side Hinged Door plus attached Secondary Side Hinged Storm Door) be conducted with the Secondary Storm Door fully opened or removed?
    3) With respect to AAMA 1702.2-95, is it the intent of the standard that summer mode testing on a combination door (Primary Door plus attached Secondary Storm Door) be conducted with the Secondary Storm Door closed, but with operable windows fully opened and with the insect screen in the functional position?
    4) With respect to AAMA 1702.2-12, is it the intent of the standard that single mode testing on a combination door (Primary Door plus attached Secondary Storm Door) be conducted with the Secondary Storm Door closed, but with operable windows fully opened and with the insect screen in the functional position?

    AAMA 1704-85 and AAMA 1704-12; Appurtenances

    Interpretation Requested:

    While both AAMA 1704-85 and AAMA 1704-12 contain specific language requiring "Primary" windows to meet the requirements of AAMA 1701, no language exists that makes the same requirement of secondary interior mounted storm windows.

    1) Are appurtenances, and specifically interior mounted storm windows, exempt from the requirements of AAMA 1701 as required in AAMA 1704-85 Section 2.2 and AAMA 1704-12 Section 4.2 as they are not Primary Windows?
    2) Are those appurtenances cited in interpretation #1 (above) eligible for testing to AAMA 1704-85 and AAMA 1704-12?

    AAMA 450-06; Bay, Bow and Other 3-Dimensional Projecting Units

    Interpretation Requested:

    Background…In the 2006 update to the AAMA 450 specification, the exclusion of bay, bow and other 3-dimensional projecting units was removed. Upon testing these mulled fenestration assemblies, several questions have come up that require additional clarification. This technical interpretation request will address the following areas specifically:
    1. Use of a roof during testing
    2. Qualifying different angled mullions with one evaluation
    3. Clarify what constitutes a water failure

    Regarding the use of bay, bow and other 3-dimensional projecting units, the following interpretations are requested:
    1. Is the test evaluation intended for the mulled fenestration assembly only and is not intended to qualify any roof constructions?
    2. Does the mullion angle used in the mulled fenestration assembly evaluation only qualify that mullion angle?
    3. Does water that penetrates the interior most plain of any individual unit and/or mull joint deem a failure?

    Interpretation Requested:

    1. When limited to a two-lite-high single hung window, if a manufacturer provides supporting engineering analysis prepared by a Structural Engineer and follows acceptable engineering practice that indicates loading (i.e. wind load, dead load, point load and deflection due to flexural loading) is equivalent or reduced on load bearing components, does structural testing of an "even split" unit qualify an "un-even split" unit when the lower portion is less than H/2 and the overall frame size of the "un-even split" unit is equal to or less than that of the "even split" unit?

    2. When limited to a two-lite-wide OX or XO horizontal sliding window, if a manufacturer provides supporting engineering analysis prepared by a Structural Engineer and follows acceptable engineering practice that indicates loading (i.e. wind load, dead load, point load and deflection due to flexural loading) is equivalent or reduced on load bearing components, does structural testing of an "even split" unit qualify an "un-even split" unit when one portion is less than W/2 and the overall frame size of the "un-even split" unit is equal to or less than that of the "even split" unit?

    FGIA Glossary 2024
    This document is an all-encompassing "FGIA Glossary" (FG-24) that is to be used from this point forward when referencing definitions in any/all FGIA documents. It was found, while reading through various FGIA documents, that we have multiple definitions in our documents for one word (a good example of this would be the word "fenestration"). Although the definitions aren't strikingly different, we want to ensure consistency throughout our documents. The definitions were compiled by researching all current AAMA and IGMA documents and extracting the definitions.

    Installation of Aluminum Curtain Walls
    This issue of Aluminum Curtain Walls is devoted principally to an in-depth discussion of metal curtain wall installation procedures. Some architects may think that this subject is of only minor concern to them; that once they have designed the wall, approved the contracts and checked the shop drawings, it’s the contractor’s business to see that the wall is correctly put in place. In part this is true, but the architect has certain responsibilities in this work, too. And without a clear knowledge of how the wall is to be installed, what problems may arise in the field and how to avoid them, there are likely to be serious deficiencies in the design of the wall.

    Methods Of Test For Exterior Walls
    These methods establish the procedures for evaluating performance of exterior metal walls under laboratory conditions. These test methods provide the criteria to measure resistance to air leakage, water penetration, and structural performance. If other performance attributes of the curtain wall specimen are to be tested (e.g., interstory movement, thermal cycling, condensation performance, etc.), a detailed test procedure must be provided in the specifications, when no standard test method exists.

    Recommended Static Test Method for Evaluating Windows, Window Wall, Curtain Wall and Storefront Systems Subjected to Vertical Inter-Story Movements
    This test method provides a means of evaluating the performance of windows, window walls, curtain walls and storefront wall systems when subjected to specified vertical displacements. This test method is a complement to AAMA 501.4. Like AAMA 501.4, this test method focuses primarily on changes in serviceability of wall system specimens (e.g., air and water leakage rates) as a result of statically applied, in-plane displacements.

    Recommended Static Testing Method for Evaluating Curtain Wall and Storefront Systems Subjected to Seismic and Wind Induced Interstory Drift
    This test method provides a means of evaluating the performance of curtain walls and storefront wall systems when subjected to specified horizontal displacements in the plane of the wall. The method is not intended to test for dynamic, torsional, or vertical movements. The relatively slow (i.e., "static") movements of this test method may not produce the same results as would be obtained in a dynamic movement test. This test method is a complement to AAMA 501.6 – "Recommended Dynamic Test Method for Determining the Seismic Drift Causing Glass Fallout from a Wall System." AAMA 501.6 focuses primarily on determining the dynamic fallout from wall system panels that are representative of the overall wall system being evaluated. In contrast, this test method focuses primarily on changes in serviceability of wall system specimens (e.g., air and water leakage rates) as a result of statically applied, inplane (horizontal) racking displacements. Thus, the AAMA 501.6 test method focuses primarily on the seismic ultimate limit state behavior of architectural glass in a wall system or partition, while this test method focuses primarily on the seismic serviceability limit state behavior of wall systems. This test method is applicable to large curtain wall and storefront mock-ups consisting of supports, components and cladding. The proper use of this test method requires an understanding of static load applications, deflection measurements, and test fixture design as required to accomplish controlled movements of the simulated structure. This test method describes the apparatus and the procedure to be used for displacing a specimen horizontally. The displacement cycle time is not limited and is not intended to duplicate the interstory displacement rates associated with dynamic building sway and seismic events.

    Sound Control for Fenestration Products
    This document was prepared for anyone who requires information on what sound is, how it is transmitted, how it is measured and how its transmission can be controlled. Although technical in nature, this document is organized to be useful to anyone from the window designer who is trying to meet an architect's sound control specification to a window salesman who just wants to help a customer understand how sound travels and what can be done to "cut down on the noise." Furthermore, this document will clarify and differentiate between the two methods of product classification, STC (Sound Transmission Class) and OITC (Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class), and their appropriate use.
