*IGMA Glass Design Software
The program, easy to install, license and use, has a unique feature among glass design checking programs, as well as improved safeguards against unintended data entries. Written specifically for the Canadian market the program checks glass strength according to the standard "Structural Design of Glass for Buildings", which is referenced by Canadian building codes. It can be switched between English and French languages, and consistent with Canadian standards, the program requires input in metric units.

Loads on the glass can be either determined by the user or calculated according to the National Building Code of Canada. When this feature is used the program asks for details about the terrain, the size and the shape of the building, the location of the glass on it, and weather data for the building site. Wind and snow loads are then determined by the program. This is an extremely useful feature as building code requirements are often difficult to follow. If, however, the loads on the glass are provided in the project specifications then they can be entered directly.

The program has graphical checks to minimize the chance of errors in the input data or in interpreting the results. The size of the glass, the thickness of each lite and whether it is annealed, heat-treated or tempered are all displayed graphically. Cautions are displayed if the glass is overstressed or deflects too much. The user can add notes to the design checks, which can be saved and retrieved later for review or editing to check a different design.

The demand for energy efficiency has made triple glazing popular again. GD 2012 uses sophisticated mathematics to determine the load sharing in insulating glass units between lites of different thicknesses. This method is much more accurate than the non-computer approach proposed in the Canadian standard for glass design – or the equivalent US standard from ASTM.

As with any engineering program the user or supervisor must be familiar with the subject matter – in this case building codes and glass design. Users are encouraged to point out any other improvements or features that they would find useful.

*Voluntary Guidelines for IGU Cavity Width Manufacturing Tolerances
The cavity width of an insulating glass unit (IGU) after fabrication varies based on changes in temperature, barometric pressure and elevation above sea level. The purpose of this guideline is to present voluntary manufacturing tolerances for IGU cavity width reduction at the point and time of IGU manufacturing. The guideline is not intended to address the dynamic aspect of cavity width variability once an IGU leaves the point of manufacture where environmental changes occur. Nor does this guideline address naturally occurring solar reflectance.
